My Little Pony Micro Series #4: Fluttershy Review

The My Little Pony Micro Series is back! This time the Pegasus with a pink mare, Fluttershy, gets to star. Do we have a solid story featuring our introverted pony? While not quite as amazing as the Rarity one, it’s a pretty solid slice of life adventure that would work as a Season One episode.

Here’s the official description from IDW:

Fluttershy knows her way around knitting! But her hidden talent starts to take on a startling new form, one that could be the next ‘big thing’ in Ponyville! Will timid Fluttershy be able to handle the spotlight? The pressure is only going to increase with a visit from Princess Celestia!

Fluttershy is my favorite MLP character, so you could imagine my excitement for this issue. The Micro Series has done a solid job telling solo stories, challenging these ponies in new ways. Aside from some mishaps in the writing and art, the Twilight Sparkle one was good. Rainbow Dash had a very traditional story that was good and challenged her endurance. The Rarity one is by far the best in everything however. So does Fluttershy dethrone her? Sadly not, but it’s still pretty good.

Barbara Kesel handles the script. She has a pretty good handle on Fluttershy for the most part. Some parts might be a little off, but it’s nothing too bad. The story is my main problem. It’s just generally unexciting and doesn’t really ‘challenge’ Fluttershy. So she has a knack for knitting and partakes in a contest. It’s not bad, I just wish they would have gone a different direction with the plot. Still, it’s a nice issue especially for younger readers, nice moral in the end. I do like how Rarity is used to encourage her Pegasus friend. (Though older readers will find it odd it took her that long enough to realize Fluttershy was in a disguise.)

Tony Fleeces handles the art. It is definitely the most show-accurate we’ve seen. This is a good thing for the most part, aside from some disproportioned panels. The art really nails Fluttershy and her reactions, especially her ‘angry’ look. Her sculpture was also quite a sight to behold. The covers are all a beauty. The main one has the title pony playing Snow White, truly a lovely cover. Cover B isn’t quite as fetching, but is cool in its own right, something fans will definitely like if they’re looking for a more ‘traditional’ cover featuring Fluttershy. The RI continues the tradition of having the character in filly form. This one might just be the best RI yet. (It does feature filly Derpy after all.)  As for store exclusives, look no further than Double Midnight’s artistic and awesome piece.

Overall, Fluttershy’s Micro Series comic wasn’t what I was hoping for. The story is generally uninteresting and in the end is a missed opportunity for my favorite pony. Now, that’s not to say it’s a bad issue. It’s nice story with a good moral saying that just cause others might not appreciate your work, you shouldn’t think it’s worthless. While not the story I was looking for, in the end it’s still worth a read.
