Haunt #24 Review

Haunt must stop a relentless creature, but should you even care if he succeeds or fails?  Read on.

The official description from Image:

It’s mayhem on the streets of Manhattan! A relentless creature of fury and fire running amok! Only Haunt can save the city from an apocalyptic end! But at what cost? The new nightmare rolls on in 2012!

The concept of the Haunt character continues to be a compelling point in this series.  The idea that a man and his dead brother are working together to save the world is just fun, and the rest of the story easily builds from that foundation.  This is a very solid to excellent issue that see’s our dysfunctional heroes fight a formidable foe, while working out some of their own problems.

It’s not perfect but Joe Casey offers a script that works.  The back and forth dialogue between the ghost and living brother is priceless as it echoes a real world dynamic that nicely translates to the comic page.  It should also be noted, that the writer had the wherewithal to understand when to step aside and let the artist do his thing.  However, this results in a rather short read but one that successfully yields some solid action that is not overburdened by pointless exposition.

Nathan Fox is in the spotlight this issue, as his art carries the majority of the  story.  The panels are chaotic, lavishly detailed and more than that they are simply engaging.  The characters look great as the world faces a fiery apocalypse.  I have no complaints about the style offered here, I only wish the issue was a bit longer so I could see more of what this talented artist can do.

Overall this is a very good read that will offer fans a fun fight, some solid dialogue and a decent finish.  Recommended.
