BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: STARBUCK #1 Review

Battlestar Galactica-Starbuck Banner

With the Edward James Olmos remake and loads of other nightmarish comic mini series, it’s been yahren since got a good revamp!

The official description from Dynamite:

Finally, the origin of Lt. Starbuck is told by #1 New York Times best selling author Tony Lee! See how Starbuck became a Viper pilot, his first meeting with Apollo and why Adama treats him like a son – as he pieces together what really happened the night he was orphaned, and the name of the traitor who ordered it…

BSG-Starbuck 1_CThis comic is a prequel to the O.G. BSG 1970’s T.V. show written by Tony Lee taking us way back to a calm and much more simple time on Caprica…just kidding that place is crawling with cylons!

The first thing we see are fleets of vipers and cylon raiders above the burning city of Umbra and in one of the cock pits is a young commander Adama, whom after just finding out he will be an expecting father is shot down by enemy raiders and escapes narrowly with his life thanks to a forest dwelling child; our soon to be Starbuck. This comic dives deep into the tangled back-story of our lead Starbuck but there are big laps of times in this first issue so be prepared to work for your meal.

The artwork by Eman Casallos is stylized in a pretty rad 70’s throw back way that pays a wonderful homage to the original series. Notable the cover art by Sean Chen depicting Starbuck surrounded by a skulk of groovy ladies (apparently even different humanoid species are no match for his charm), I did however have to ask myself what is it about Starbuck that we are all drawn to? Sure we admire his doggedness and determination to succeed whether its in a battle or trying to uncover the mystery of his past but he isn’t particularly likable, so why?  My only conclusion is that he’s unforgivably himself.

Battlestar Galactica: Starbuck #1, even without much of a fair comparison is by far the best introduction to a BSG comic I’ve read. It’s genuinely a lot of fun and doesn’t waste a lot of time getting lost in any mangled plots issues and I can’t fracking wait for the next issue!
