AVENGERS VS X-MEN…WHY YES PLEASE

In the wake of 2011’s tepidly received cross-over event Fear Itslef, Marvel has announced their plans for next years big book: Avengers vs X-Men. The title will lead the House of Ideas as a monthly 12-issue mini-series. They’ll undoubtedly pulbish their usual barrage of peripheal tie-ins, but for the time being, they’ve left those plans undiscussed.

Every Marvel heavy-hitter will be involved with the book’s production, and among them are some of my favorite industry writers: Hickman, Bendis, Fraction, and Brubacker. While details about the story’s specifics are still guarded in secrecy, we know the main source of contention will be the revival of the Phoenix Force and its relationship with Hope Summers.

I’m pretty excited for this book for any number of reasons. For the last decade, the X-Men have been dismissed in the greater Marvel Universe. They’ve been treated as their own seperate sub-division of the greater MU, besides the ubiquitous Wolverine and Deadpool. Although we’re granted our occasional Cyclops or Jean Grey guest-appearances, the muties are generally confined to their own world, and for good reason!

The X-Universe could fill a publishing house all by itself. With all of its heroes, villains, and story arcs, it rivals the rest of Marvel’s properties. So trying to bring these muties back into the fold is is a pretty daunting task…but let’s hope they’ve figured it out. As long as I see Captain America vs Cyclops, I’ll happily buy up these books.
