Avengers #8 Review

The Starbrand has fallen on Earth, but who possess this awesome power? And how will the Avengers deal with them?

Here is the summary from Marvel:

The Avengers face off against the World Breaker. Discover the imminent threat to the Avengers World. Watch as we get our first hints as the hidden connections between the events of Avengers and New Avengers.

The Starbrand has fallen on the Earth and the Avengers have gone to collect. Encountering a young boy named Kevin Conner in the ruins of a nearby college, The Avengers move to contain him and see what affect the Starbrand may have on the world. Things turn to absolute HELL however as Hulk (Brain trust that he is) moves to attack the boy as his powers begin to fluctuate wildly. A battle between the Avengers & Kevin begins to rage until he is taken by Adam AKA Nightmask to Mars in order to learn how to control his powers.

Jonathan Hickman continues to stay consistent in Avengers by adding on more and more stakes to the book. I like how Cap assembled the heavy hitters to find Kevin (Hulk, Captain Marvel, Captain Universe, Thor, & Hyperion) we get to see more of these characters and how they interact as a team, which is essential for a team book like Avengers. Kevin is your average college kid with no idea what he has gotten into and it shows in the dialogue and pacing of the story. Hickman uses the characters from Marvel’s “New Universal” line well and lays some hints as to events that have been going on in New Avengers (which he also writes).

Dustin Weaver continues to do a good job on pencils. Giving the panels a nice easy flow and showcasing dynamic action scenes. There is also a sense to scale to his work that suits this book perfectly. He portrays Hickman’s script well and it is clear that this team is working like a well oiled machine. The landscapes a massive and add the weight of the changes about to take place in the world.

While not too much happens this issue, it is clear that the other shoe is about to drop quickly, and the plot points are sure to come back into the story full force as more implications from the “White Event” are explored. Next issue an “old friend” returns, we will see what role he will play in the chaos.
