Abe Sapien #4 Review

Abe Sapien returns for a fourth outing and start of a two part arc. Does the unique series continue with quality? You bet, it’s definitely the most interesting issue yet.

Here’s the official description from Dark Horse:

While on the run from the Bureau, Abe makes his way to the Salton Sea, where he encounters a bizarre egg-worshiping cult.

This B.P.R.D. spin-off title has been nothing short of a great read. It’s a very unique science fiction story in the ‘real world.’ What I mean by that is the story doesn’t really go into fantasy land, it’s gritty and realistic. The main character has been nothing short of engaging. This issue was very light on the action, in fact, there’s virtually no big action sequences. But that’s okay since the action is in the great writing.

John Arcudi writes a very compelling Abe. (Like always.) Here we have him trying to understand what’s happening by going to the Salton Sea where a giant egg rests. Here he meets a bunch of humans who, surprising as it sounds, manage to be compelling characters in such little page-time. The dynamic between Barry and Abe was a dramatic and tension filled scene. I really like the dialogue between the title character and these humans. Not only is it an engaging read, it helps set the tone for this ‘end of days’ story. The series is going in a fantastic direction.

Max Fiumara’s art is once again solid throughout. Abe’s expressionless face mirrors his passive personality well. The few monsters that appear look great as always. The cover is pretty good, it sets the atmosphere with the hatching egg well. The variant by Sebastián Fiumara is pretty fantastic, the one to get since it features Hellboy and one pretty cool monster.

Overall, Abe Sapien is back for another great issue. Those looking for action may be disappointed, but the dialogue doesn’t fail. This is one of the best written comics I’ve read in awhile. Even if you’re not into Hellboy or B.P.R.D., I recommend giving this series a shot.

John Arcudi wrote this two parter. I only wrote the first two pages of this issue and the last two of the next.
