E3 2012: Platinum Games’ New Project Announced

Platinum Games are making a name for themselves amongst the gaming hardcore for presenting well made, intense action experiences. With a pedigree of Bayonetta, Vanquish and the upcoming Metal Gear Solid Rising: Revengeance, it’s safe to assume whatever they’re working on is going to be exciting and their newly announced game Project P-100 (Working Title) looks just that. The director is Hideki Kamiya, who has previously worked as director on Bayonetta, Okami and Viewtiful Joe. Who can argue with that record?

One of the overlooked games of Nintendo’s E3 press conference, this one didn’t get much screen time but so far appears to be one of the most fascinating. A sort of mash up between Pikmin and superheroes this has all of the quirk and craziness typical of a Platinum Games outing, as well as the tight controls and sense of outlandish fun.

The premise is simple, massive aliens have attacked Earth and the heroes are not powerful enough individually to stop them, they have to team up to stop the threat. In a recent interview, game producer Atsushi Inaba stated “it may seem similar to Pikmin at first blush but it’s actually focused more on group actions and abilities rather than individual actions performed in a crowd.” As you play through the game you meet more and more heroes, the greater variety of heroes you have, the wider the range of attacks at your disposal.

I’m not going to lie I’m baffled by this game, the trailer has so much going on it’s mind blowing but all I know is that it looks like a blast to play and with Platinum Games’ track record, it’s one to watch.
