BLIZZARD Trademarks Overwatch

Welcome to another edition of UnleashTheFanboy’s “Rumor That Rumor”! Today we are going to look at the filing of a new trademark by Blizzard Entertainment (of World of Warcraft fame) for something called “Overwatch”.

“Overwatch” is usually a military term used to describe when one military vehicle supports another while executing fire and movement tactics.

More than that, Blizzard has also announced a new job opening for a “Lead Producer” on their website for an “Unannounced Game Title”.

As part of the job outline and description it says that:

“With Heartstone, Blizzard has revived its tradition of creating small and nimble game teams and we are following in those footsteps. As part of our team, you will join in the leadership of a small but mighty band of developers and exert your talents to help craft our processes, organization, goals and execution.”

Could this be a coincidence? Perhaps. But UnleashTheFanboy doesn’t believe in coincidences, so we have sent our best investigative journalism team to Blizzard’s headquarters in Irvine, California to infiltrate their operation and get you the truth behind “Overwatch”.

While undercover, our team started looking through Blizzard Entertainment’s trash when they found an old pull-string doll of Kael’Thas Sunstrider that said “This dumpster was merely a setback!”

But getting nowhere with interrogating the doll, our team pretended to apply for the job opening. Seven hours and two cups of coffee later, our Video Games Contributor, Michael Moore managed to get an interview with Chris Metzan, Senior Vice President of Story and Franchise Development.

Using his superior UnleashTheFanboy questioning techniques, Moore answered all of Metzan’s questions with a question:

Metzan: So Mr. Moore, why do you think you are the candidate for the job?

Moore: Why am I over here?

Metzan: What?

Moore: Is anyone watching over me?

Metzan: Mr. Moore, I don’t thi-

Moore: WHAT THE HELL IS OVERWATCH?

When Michael Moore tried to grab Metzan’s shirt collar, green-skinned security burst into the room to escort him out.

Before Moore was thrown out of the building, he could hear Metzan loudly cackling to himself in his office.

You win this time, Blizzard. You win this time.
