5 Ways to Improve The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Video Game

Two weeks ago, the trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was revealed for all the world to see. Though initially skeptical because of my mixed feelings about the previous movie, the trailer did ease my fears a little. Almost immediately after watching, I thought about the inevitable accompanying game. I’ll admit it wasn’t awesome, but The Amazing Spider-Man game (or ASMG) was still fun to play. If the movie looks to improve on where they faux pawed (I’m pretty sure that’s not the correct term but oh well), then I hope Beenox, the developers for all Spidey-related games for the next decade, will do the same. Here’s five ways they can make their fun game even more fun.

#1 KEEP WEB-RUSH WEB SLINGING

One of the biggest promotions for ASMG was Beenox’s patented ‘Web-Rush’ system. By holding a shoulder button, time slows and you can see all the locations you can send Spider-Man to — the top of a flagpole, the side of a building, etc. It’s a stylish way to get Spider-Man around quickly in a way that involves pulling off some crazy acrobatic moves to get there. It was used for all aspects of the game, but it truly shined when it came to moving across New York. I can’t tell you how much time I spent perfecting my web-rush-slinging (another non-correct term but oh well). Hopefully Beenox kept (and maybe improved) what was probably the best part of their game.

#2 IMPROVE THE COMBAT SYSTEM

Let’s face it, the combat system for every superhero game is going to be influenced by the Batman: Arkham games. While that’s not a bad thing, a lot of game developers tend to not put in as much time working on it as Rocksteady Studios did. Regrettably, Beenox is one of those developers. Though Spider-Man’s fighting style remained true to the acrobatic freestyle attacks we’ve come to expect, it lacked the sharp, fluid animations of Rocksteady’s Batman. I know there is a world of difference between the fighting styles of Batman and Spider-Man, but if you’re going to hi-jack someone else’s game mechanics, do it justice when adapting it.

#3 NO MORE ROBOTS!

In Spider-Man: The Animated Series, Alistair Smythe was a recurring villain. With that, came hundreds of robots that Spider-Man ended up fighting. At one point Spidey himself said “Robots. I hate robots!” After playing through ASMG, I kind of felt the same way. Since Smythe got killed by his own creations in the first game, I don’t think we will be seeing him or those 20 story high robots again. If he does come back, I hope he either turns himself into the Ultimate Spider-Slayer from the comics or builds those three specialty slayers from said animated series.

 #4 MORE DIVERSE SIDE-MISSIONS

Aside from the story missions in ASMG, you tackle random crimes and activities you come across. As much as I enjoy fighting normal crimes, I can’t help but feel how literally repetitive each crime is. Stuff like hearing the same one-liners from Spidey and the people you help, and chasing down the exact the same car really brings the game down. I know this is a tough economy but not all criminals are driving the same car! I’m glad Beenox is taking a page from Infamous and adding a “Hero or Menace” system where players will be rewarded for their choices in crime fighting, but a little more can be done. Little things like adding more dialogue, alternate the bad guy’s A.I., and having different types of vehicles (and different animations to stop them) to chase missions, will make such a difference. People don’t mind doing the same thing over and over again. Just not the EXACT same thing.

 #5 MORE COSTUME CHANGES

Beenox definitely shows their geek (or fanboy) side by giving players the option to change into different Spider-Man costumes. If they decide to keep up the tradition, my personal picks are the Iron Spider, Superior Spider-Man, Bombastic Bag-Man, the Miles Morales suit, and a black suit that doesn’t suck. Seriously guys, the black suit from Spider-Man 3 is horrible to look at. Time to let it die like Marvel let Peter Parker die (awww sad time).
