Green Lantern: The Animated Series “Cold Fury” Review

Today’s episode of Green Lantern: The Animated Series follows up the episode that many fans claim had the most shocking ending in the series. The ending actually didn’t mean much to me, honestly, but does this episode change my mind? FULL SPOILERS FOLLOW! Seriously, if you haven’t seen the last one, DON’T READ THIS! You have been warned!

At the end of the last episode, the Anti-Monitor (Tom Kenny) murdered Aya (Grey DeLisle) right in front of Razer’s (Jason Spisak) eyes. As we begin here, thing look grim. Aya is dead, Razer is heart-broken and in shock, the Interceptor isn’t at full capacity, and the Anti-Monitor is heading towards Ysmault, the Red Lantern planet. Now Hal Jordan (Josh Keaton), Kilowog (Kevin Michael Richardson), Zillius Zox (also Tom Kenny), and a female guardian. Uh-oh.

I’ll be honest, I actually didn’t think the last episode was so great. I dunno, but Aya’s death scene didn’t make me all that emotional for some reason. But I will say this: I LOVED THIS EPISODE! This is the pay-off, and oh my, what a pay-off it is!

This episode gives off a desperation feel. Anti-Monitor is unstoppable; the whole cast agrees that defeating it is nigh impossible. The female guardian actually gets to look awesome, as she unleashes her full power to combat the Anti-Monitor; I used to hate her, but only after she is killed did I realize that, actually, she had grown on me. And with a guardian unable to defeat Anti-Monitor, this makes things even grimmer for our heroes!

The action scenes are better than ever; the large space fight, with the Interceptor and Red Lanterns vs the Anti-Moniter and his legions of Manhunters, is almost awe-inspiring; such an epic space battle probably hasn’t been seen since Star Wars! Not to say that action is the only thing here. We also get a very frank discussion about love when Aya, who has returned (more on that in a sec) confronts Razer about his declaration last episode. It is a very emotional scene, maybe a bit soap-operish, but I welcomed it. The dialogue is perfect.

About Aya returning, I will admit, at first, I was very annoyed. ‘What a cop-out!”, I thought. She just died. Back already? HOWEVER, I should have trusted the writers. There is a very good reason for bringing her back. At the end of the episode, driven on because of a falling-out with Razer, decides to super-charge herself, and destroy Anti-Monitor. The scene is AWESOME, as Aya charges through Manhunters like so much toilet paper, and when she blasts through Anti-Monitor, I cheered.

And then, the bombshell: Aya has taken control of Anti-Monitor’s body, and now she appears to be taking over his goals. Yup, Aya is evil now, and plans to destroy all living things, to save Manhunters, who she believes aren’t evil, as they are just obeying the programming that they were given. Awesome.

IMMA FIRIN’ MAH LAZOR!

I had some minor complaints, but nothing that destracts from the episode. I think Razer was a bit of a jerk here, and I kinda wish that we got to see more than two named Red Lanterns, but oh well. And where is Atrocitus? But whatever. The writers even managed to make Anti-Monitor cool! This may just be the best episode in the show so far, and I eagerly await next week. Cartoon Network was foolish to cancel this show.
