ANIME MONDAY: Magi: Labyrinth of Magic – “His Name Is Judar” Review

Previously on Magi:

The Fog Troop attacked the hotel to retrieve Alibaba, they are soon stopped by Sinbad and the others with the Sindrian king  joining the group of thieves. With Sinbad encouraging him, Alibaba confronts his step brother Abhmad. Spoilers Ahead.

Alibaba & Sinbad confront King Abhmad about the state of Balbadd, but only Sinbad words are acknowledged. Soon both of them are surprised when Abhmad announces that he will relinquish all of Balbadd’s trading rights to the Kou Empire, it is then that Alibaba meets the Kou Empire’s priest Judar, who is also a Magi. After being thrown out of the palace, Sinbad and the others are once again confronted by Judar, who challenges Aladdin to a fight.

We finally get a proper introduction to Judar this episode, he has been appearing in the show as a mysterious figure as far back as episode 3. He is shown as extremely hostile and slightly psychotic, evident when her suddenly punches Aladdin in the face and then challenges him to a fight. He is also shown to be very adept at manipulating Rukh as he introduces magic into the series. Basically by giving gathering Rukh commands, one can use magic; Judar demonstrates this by using both lightning and ice magic against Aladdin. He can also “see” King Candidates by searching their bodies for dungeons with some kind of X-ray vision.

Judar using Ice magic

Aladdin gets into his first official battle in this episode and it pretty nice as he holds his own against the more experienced Judar, his attacks mostly being ineffective as how he doesn’t know how to use magic and their Magoi attacks cancel each other out. He is still fairly new at being a Magi so Ugo & Alibaba (who manages to cut Judar’s face) mostly have to pick up the slack during the battle, and the Djinn goes OFF. Basically beating Judar into submission after the former impales him with a few Ice Spears. The mystery however is how Ugo managed to move independently without Aladdin pumping Magoi into him, even as the Djinn’s was leaking out.

“His Name Is Judar is a pretty action centric episode in it’s later half. We get an intro to a new antagonist as well as some more development on Aladdin & Ugo. The battle between the two Magi was a good one, even if the animation slacked at times. The adventure continues next week as the battle with Judar continues.
