ANIME MONDAY: Fairy Tail – “The Final Showdown on Galuna Island” Review

Previously on Fairy Tail:

Gray told Lucy, Erza, & Happy of his past while Natsu headed inside the temple to take down Lyon. Spoilers Ahead.

Natsu (Todd Haberkorn) resumes his battle with Lyon (Jerry Jewel) but the two are soon interrupted by Gray (Newton Pittman) who busts up the fight between the two and tries to cast Iced Shell on Lyon. Meanwhile Lucy (Cherami Leigh), Erza (Colleen Clinkenbeard), & Happy (Tia Ballard) take on Lyon’s followers outside the temple. Natsu stops Gray from casting Iced Shell and gives him a lecture before chasing after Zalty (Mark Stoddard). With the two now alone, Gray & Lyon engage in a fierce fight to the finish.

There is action a plenty this episode as we have: Gray Vs. Lyon, Natsu Vs. Zalty, & Erza, Lucy, & Happy Vs. Lyon’s followers. Obviously the majority of the episode is based on Gray & Lyon’s fight, building it up as a fight between Ur’s disciples. The two engage in brutal hand to hand combat before battling with their ice magic. These are pretty good scenes as Gray is at first being bested by Lyon but makes a pretty strong comeback.

We also get some more development on his relationship with Natsu. Natsu initially punches Gray, stopping him from using the Iced Shell and gives him a lecture on how sacrificing himself would solve nothing and it wouldn’t be something Ur would want. Then as he is going bare knuckle with Lyon he remembers the brawls he and Natsu used to have when they were kids, which spurred him on. He berates Lyon for wasting his life on freeing Deliora instead of following Ur’s wishes of finding stronger wizards, which is what Gray did; as he initially came upon Fairy Tail while searching for a way to free Ur.

Natsu begins a battle with the enigmatic Zalty as he chases him through the temple. Zalty reveals that his magic is an ancient one that allows him to control the time of objects around them. This means that he can cause things like rocks to erode and break apart or even fix the pillars that Natsu destroyed on his way into the temple. The sudden shift of the temple cause the moon drip ceremony to resume.

Natsu Vs. Zalty

We also get a revelation in the form of the true identities of Lyon’s masked followers. They are the surviving people from Deliora’s attack on Brago 10 years ago who have agreed to help Lyon if it means they can get vengeance on the monster for killing their loved ones.

“The Final Showdown on Galuna Island” is a pretty good episode with the good fights and some good moments. The battle between Gray and Lyon is one filled with anger and sorrow between the two as both Ice wizards are fighting to uphold their vision of their masters legacy and the explored relationship between gray and his friends was nice. The magic continues next week as Fairy Tail has to now deal with the return of Deliora.
