VIZ MEDIA to Release Original SAILOR MOON Anime, Plus CRYSTAL!

In possibly the biggest anime announcement of the last few years, Viz Media announced today at Anime Central that they have gotten the license to the hit 90s magical girl anime Sailor Moon! Yes, the whole thing – all 200 episodes, including the never-before-released in North America Stars season, all three films, and even various TV specials!

Sailor Moon, despite arguably being one of the most popular anime series of all time, has never had a great release in the States – until now! Viz Media will be releasing the whole show with a new, uncut dub (the original dub featured heavy edits, name-changes, skipped episodes, etc), with a Blu-ray release! The show will keep it’s uncropped, 4:3 aspect ratio.

Viz Media also has the streaming rights to all of the above, and will stream at various locations, including Hulu, with subs coming first, and the new dub premiering in the Fall.

Viz Media also announced that they snagged the license to the upcoming remake, Sailor Moon Crystal, with more details to come in following months!

Sailor Moon, based on the popular manga from Naoko Takeuchi, ran 1992 to 1997 with five series, and in North America, gained popularity after airing on Toonami. The manga was recently re-licensed in America by Kodansha.

I know a lot of people will be buying this, and hopefully, new fans will check it out, too. This is pretty big news, even bigger than the recent Digimon and Cardcaptor Sakura re-license news!

So, will you buy this? Just one series? On Blu-ray, or DVD?
