The Soviets Made a Hobbit Movie in 1985. Yeah, It’s Awesome

I think it’s safe to assume that the vast majority of Tolkien addicts have sated their HOBBIT craving with Peter Jackson’s latest flick (you know… the one about that whole UNEXPECTED JOURNEY), but if you’re still jonesing for some Middle-Earth, allow me to blow your mind.

The Soviets were never too keen on copyright laws, and once upon a time in 1985, they made their very own version of Bilbo’s classic adventure. Besides the utter mediocrity of it all, a few endearing traits (mainly an old, Russian cast comprised of stage actors) make the brief 90 minute movie worthwhile. Although, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of Vodka… and Kalashnikov wielding double agents.

Anyways, check out the full flick below:

I feel obligated to make a terrible, “In Soviet Middle Earth…” joke, but I’ll leave that to you in the comments.

Oh, and about that Vodka, I think it ended up on set of a different movie…
