Sometimes an event happens in the anime world that just shake the industry to its core…this is one such event. Initially announced at Otakon during the summer, Space Dandy is a newly created science-fiction comedy anime directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (the man behind Samurai Champloo and the anime classic Cowboy Bebop) and produced by Studio Bones (the production behind Fullmetal Alchemist, its sequel Brotherhood, Soul Eater, Ouran Host Club, Eureka Seven: AO, and a quite a few other shows).

Now if Shinichiro Watanabe directing a brand new show wasn’t news enough, Space Dandy was announced today to have already been licensed by Funimation, and if that doesn’t get you jumping here’s one better, Funimation is producing an English dub of Space Dandy that will premiere on Adult Swim in January 4th of next year…before the Japanese premiere!

This is pretty huge news for the anime community as this is something that has never happened before. An English dub premiering on the same day as the Japanese premiere, let alone before it is more than a bit unprecedented.  The closest thing similar to this is with Pokemon (where the dub of X/Y premieres 2 days after the Japanese premiere).

Not too much is known about Space Dandy plot wise, but as far as we know it tells the story of an alien hunter named Dandy, who is apparently “a dandy guy in the space” and his search for new alien species along with his “bucket of bolts” robot assistant QT and a dim-witted cat alien named Meow.

Pretty cool right? So what do you guys think? Will Space Dandy be another milestone in Watanabe’s storied career? Or will it come crashing down to Earth?
