My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic ‘Three’s a Crowd’ Review

We’re now eleven episodes into Season 4. The previous one was definitely very good, despite a questionable portrayal of the Wonderbolts. (Derpy makes up for everything right?) This one a lot of people were looking forward to especially. Why? Well, anything with Discord automatically gets hype. Plus, Princess Cadance appears. In fact, this is her first appearance in season 4, she hasn’t been seen since ‘Magical Mystery Cure‘ nearly a year ago. So, how does this episode stack up? It’s definitely one of the most entertaining ones of the season. Then again, wherever Discord goes, entertainment follows.

Here’s the official episode description from The Hub:

“As Twilight Sparkle eagerly anticipates the arrival of Princess Cadance, Discord dishes up quite the dreadful disruption when he arrives and begs the ponies to take care of him while he is sick. But when Discord’s diva like demands get ridiculously out of hand, Twilight’s generosity and friendship skills are put to the test during her special weekend.”

This was a fun little episode. Discord was obviously the highlight, he’s a truly fantastic character. We never know when he’s pretending or when he’s not. If the writers wanted to make him evil again, it’d be incredible easy to do so. He could be trolling everyone for all we know. Sadly, this is one of those episodes where Pinkie Pie is written as pretty one-dimensional. This might be one of her worst written portrayals in awhile. But anyways, this episode is mainly about Twilight and Cadence who are trying to enjoy some quality time together while Discord rains on that parade.

Cadance is always fun to watch. Despite being a ‘pink princess.’ she never fails to be a highlight. The thing I personally enjoyed in this episode was the giant worm monster that appeared. It had a pretty cool design and a fun fight against Twilight and Cadance. It’s sometimes easy to forget that this is a fantasy-based world where giant monsters and dragons are a normal thing. Plus who doesn’t enjoy some ponies using their Alicorn powers to fend off monstrous foes? The show doesn’t have too many fight scenes, but when it does they’re a lot of fun. One of the biggest hyped things was that Discord would be singing for the first time. It’s definitely something, though to fully appreciate it seeing the visuals is a must.

Overall, a very fun episode. Discord is the biggest troll in media, he never gets old. (Despite knowing that fact, the ending should still be pretty surprising to most people.) Twilight and Cadance is probably the greatest tag-team in all of Equestria. The fight between them and the monster was an unexpected but very nice surprise. ‘Three’s a Crowd‘ also has a very nice end moral, that a time between friends is still a time worth spent, whether it be relaxing or doing a chore.
