International #TableTopDay. Finally, A Holiday I Can Get Behind

TableTop gamers! Finally we have a holiday (besides Boxing Day which in my house means a number of increasingly drunken and mean-spirited games of Lord of the Rings themed Monopoly)!

Today the always amazing Felicia Day of Geek and Sundry (and a few other things) declared March 30th to be International Tabletop Day. The plan is for gamers and local FLGS to organize games and events for anyone who might be…game.

Get it?

Day claims that the decision is based on the surprising success of Geek and Sundry’s TableTop show. For those of you who don’t already obsessively follow the show, TableTop is a web series featuring the adorable Will Wheaton and like-minded nerds playing tabletop board games. Sound amazing? WELL IT IS.

Tabletop games have entered into something of a renaissance in recent years due to the increasing variety of games and styles, from party games to intense, day long tactical games, the increased availability of games (games as once esoteric as Catan and Agricola are now available alongside Sorry and Chutes and Ladders at big-box retailers like Target, though if you live near a FLGS please give them your money because reasons) and increasing media exposure of games.

See, even Ron Fucking Swanson plays games.

The best thing about this is the really fortuitous timing. The March 30th date means that I have something to occupy at least ONE day before the new season of Game of Thrones debuts. That for me means that I will HAVE to organize a round of the massive and awesome Game of Thrones board game. In the mean time, Felicia asks that people support International TableTop day but using the hashtag #TableTopDay on twitter and organizing local events in places where FLGSs might not be available.
