GOTHAM Reveals First Look At Sean Pertwee As Alfred Pennyworth

I’m in a conflicted state of mind on  Gotham. One minute I’m raging against it (Gordon not having a mustache, Selina Kyle and Bruce Wayne seemingly being friends as children), other times I’m loving the direction they’re taking (Penguin and Harvey Bullock’s looks). Luckily, today is another good day, as we get our first look at Bruce’s trusted butler Alfred Pennyworth in the upcoming prequel series.

Alfred is described as “a tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London who has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.” Whereas most Alfreds have typically looked more elderly, Pertwee’s Alfred looks like he can handle himself well in a brawl. The pocket watch is a nice touch to give him an air of sophistication.

Alfred has almost always had a military background in the comics, but many fans have compared Pertwee’s Alfred to the Alfred from Batman: Earth One and Beware the Batman. He certainly gives off an authoritative presence, and I suspect that young Bruce will begin his combat training with the militaristic Alfred.

By the way, for any Doctor Who fans out there, Pertwee is the son of Jon Pertwee, the actor who played the Third Doctor from 1969 to 1974, and man, he looks exactly like his father! The resemblance is uncanny.
