GARY OLDMAN. STAR WARS EPISODE 7. Sith Please.

Alright J. J. Abrams doubters, time to pack up your bags and go home, because that director kinda knows what the fuck he’s doing. That is, if Gary Oldman’s telling the truth. According to that Batman champion, the folks behind STAR WARS EPISODE 7 have inquired about his interest in a role. Here’s what he said:

“They’ve called. … I’m more cynical about it now. I’ll believe it when I’m on the plane home. The deal isn’t done. But yeah they’ve inquired.”

Wow.

I know Star Wars has cast some amazing actors in the past (Ewan McGregor, Alec Guiness, Christopher Lee, Liam Neeson, etc), but Oldman… well, he’s a whole different beast. Given he’s cast in the proper role, of course. And the only proper role would be a Sith.

I don’t want to see Oldman as an old, politicking, diplomat or a meandering Jedi (especially with Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker playing the alpha Jedi). Utilize his acting chops and cast him as the Big Bad.

I love Emperor Palpatine as much as the next fat, bearded fanboy, but Ian McDiarmid’s performance was entirely subsidized by the necessarily ‘evil’ nature of Sith. “Here’s a black robe, some scary contacts, and some hideous makeup. All you have to do is act creepy, and you’ll be the perfect villain!”. Now, imagine Oldman as a Sith. What kind of terror could he convey as a maniacal villain, hacking his way through the Jedi hordes with his red lightsaber, fighting to the seed of Grand Master Luke Skywalker?

Admittedly, the fact that Oldman’s discussed a possible role with the folks at LucasFilm doesn’t indicate that he’ll be cast, but it’s likely. He’s unlike the rest of young Hollywood, all of whom seem to have auditioned for the coveted young Jedi roles. No, Oldman’s among a smaller pool of candidates for a more venerated character, whoever he may be, and if Abrams is lucky enough to find Oldman with free time in his schedule, he’ll most definitely sign him up for Star Wars Episode 7.
