Ewan McGregor Is The 15th Actor Cast as DOCTOR STRANGE

Ewan McGregor might be Doctor Strange.

Let that settle in for a moment. Obi-Wan Kenobi — the sage, the sentinel, the only reason to watch the Prequel Trilogy — might join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in what will undoubtedly be a multi-picture deal. Of all the rumored thespians to don the Cloak of Levitation (Joaquin Phoenix and Ethan Hawke among them) McGregor gets my vote.

But let’s talk about that for a second… Why the Hell is Marvel so desperate for an A-List star for the Doctor Strange movie? They’ve been content to cast nobodies and mid-tier talent in the past. Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, and Chris Pratt (The Christopher Triumvirate, as we’ve termed them at UTF) are terrific actors, but nowhere near the top of Hollywood’s pecking order. Marvel bought some cheap actors, draped them in their super strong brand, and hammered them into our brains. And now, we totally love those dudes. So why wouldn’t Marvel continue this trend with their newer characters?

And the answers pretty obvious…

With these Civil War rumors popping up on the web, an event that will paint Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man in a pseudo-villainous light, Marvel’s hungry for another A-list talent to lead their Universe. Downey always demands a gigantic paycheck, which he’s wont to do (after all, the Marvel Universe is built on Iron Man’s success), but Kevin Feige and crew won’t cover his tab forever. They need an out. They need a quality, top tier actor who can lead the Universe.

Ewan McGregor, Joaquin Phoenix, Ethan Hawke, and the rest of the rumored candidates can TOTALLY take the lead. Of course, I much prefer McGregor to the rest, but any of these guys will do. I desperately want to see Ewan in another badass role. In a multi-film contract. Beating the shit out of creatures, demons, and super villains. He’s just gotta be Doctor Strange.

Unless those Obi-Wan Trilogy rumors are true. McGregor’s Obi-Wan deserves to star in quality films.
