Will We See Another JUDGE DREDD Movie…?

Neither of the efforts to bring the famous 2000AD character Judge Dredd to the big screen have been awfully successful. The first happened in the 90’s with Sylvester Stallone; a small box office hit but it was critically maulled, holding an 18% Rotten Tomatoes rating. The second was back in 2012; Dredd was a critical darling and has since evolved into a cult hit, but it failed to break even at the box office. Third time lucky, maybe?

That’s what co-creator John Wagner thinks. The co-creator of the character hit up Facebook earlier (via Den of Geek), revealing that another Judge Dredd movie will most likely happen.

He’s probably right. Even if it takes another seventeen years (fourteen, now) there will most likely be a third stab at the Judge, but whether it’ll actually be a success is anybody’s guess. I’m pretty sure the potential is there to make a big hit but it’s all dependent on things such as marketing, quality, and even the world at the time. People weren’t gonna go from a galaxy far, far away in 1977 to Mega City One.

For a long time there were several attempts to get a Dredd sequel made. The movie ended up doing pretty well on home video, so fan campaigns sprung up and the creators lobbied with the studios, but at the end of the day there isn’t an awful lot of gain to be had from making another movie, and Hollywood revolves around money. A sequel would probably make less than the first, too. As cool as it was, Karl Urban will most likely not be suiting up in the near future.

Would you take Dredd 2 over another reboot? What could either movie be about? Sound off in the usual place.
