IRON MAN 3 was quite the box office smash hit and the perfect way to not only knock off the beginning of the 2013 summer blockbusters, but to also begin Phase 2 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film now sits in the 5th spot of the highest grossing films with over $1.2 billion. That’s obviously a remarkable feat and it seems only right that there would be a sequel already in the works. Man Of Steel already had it’s sequel green-lighted before it even hit theaters and The Amazing Spider-Man series already has release dates for it’s 3rd and 4th film, when the 2nd is still a year away. So why not an IRON MAN 4?
As you know, Iron Man 3 wasn’t exactly loved by all due to the huge twist towards the end of the film that completely ruined Iron Man’s greatest nemesis from the comics. I admit, it was pretty weird and devastating, but that doesn’t change the fact that Iron Man 3 still was a great film. One of the best of the MCU so far. The industry is full of money grubbing business men who do everything in there power to get more and more money. But guess what, Robert Downey Jr. just signed a contract to return as Tony Stark in The Avengers 2 and The Avengers 3, but not an Iron Man 4…
Many credit Tony’s destroying of all his suits at the end of Iron Man 3 and getting the ARC reactor taken out of his chest as the reason for no sequel being made. But why would that be the end of Iron Man? Tony Stark still lives on, and Tony Stark is Iron Man.
Tony Stark is obviously the most beloved character in the MCU (besides Coulson), so people want to see him again. One of my biggest fears is that since Marvel is looking into films for new superheroes that are not the original Avengers, Tony’s role in The Avengers 2 & 3 will be decreased. Possibly even to just a Nick Fury ‘helping’ or ‘motivating’ the team r0le. Don’t get me wrong, Nick Fury is a great guy, but he has his place and role. That’s what he needs to be, not what Tony needs to be.
You might just think I’m an Iron Man fanboy and just want to see more Iron Man films. Well, turns out that I am an Iron Man fanboy, but I only want to see more films because there are so many great stories that can be told. They can make up for the crappy Iron Man 3 twist absolutely no one liked, we may have laughed a bit at it, but afterwards it just got ugly. For instance, they can do the Demon In A Bottle story where Iron Man’s suit malfunctions and he accidentally kills an ambassador. Tony can be hunted by the authorities and possibly S.H.I.E.L.D., somewhat like how in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanoff, and Nick Fury are hunted down. It can continue how Captain America 2 will cap-off the sort of ‘betrayed by your own country’ series of films. Then, like in the original comic book story, Justin Hammer returns and he was behind it all along.
The potential of another Iron Man film that is based off of some of the best Iron Man comic books (and stays true to them) could be amazing. If you’ve ever read some of the Iron Man comics I’m talking about, you should know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, I highly recommend you head to your local comic book store and check some out. It won’t be a waste of time…
‘Iron Man 4’ is not in development and is not likely to be announced anytime soon, but Robert Downey Jr. is set to reprise his role as Tony Stark/Iron Man in The Avengers 2 and 3.
