THOR Burns DC, Says It’s No Competition For Marvel

Those are some mighty words from Marvel’s Mightiest Avenger.

While hitting the press rounds on behalf of Rush, his latest silver screen endeavor, Chris Hemsworth briefly discussed the cinematic rivalry between Marvel and DC.  Thor Odinson said…

“We’re just winning aren’t we? That’s not really a rivalry.”

Well, that’s just haughty. True, but haughty.

Without drawing the ire of Marvel fanboys (a group to which I proudly belong), I have to pick a point with Hemsworth in this one instance. Sure, Kevin Feige and the boys at Marvel Studios have produced (and released) nearly a bakers dozen of superhero flicks including Hemsworth’s upcoming Thor: The Dark World, which will soon allow that studio to become the highest grossing franchise in history, but are they the best Marvel movies that could possibly be made?

Nah… I don’t think so. Thanks to Robert Downey Jr.’s first Iron Man flick, Marvel’s discovered that they can rely on humor and mediocre popcorn films for billion dollar paydays. I’m not saying I don’t enjoy these flicks, but they’re certainly not as ambitious as Watchmen, Road to Perdition, or even Spider-Man 2, which were all genre defying when they were released (the genre being comic book films).

So sure, DC’s simply can’t compete with the prolific nature of Marvel, but when comparing substance, neither comic company is a clear winner.
