Video game films are looking like the next superhero genre. While video game sales are hitting record breaking numbers. Hollywood is looking to hitch their wagon to this cash train. Studios are snatching up major game brands. With the hope to create new film franchises. Currently there are movies based on Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted, Warcraft, Mass Effect, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider (reboot), Splinter Cell and Deus Ex: Human Revolution in development. It sounds like Sony is looking to add another title to that list. IGN reports that company has registered film domains for The Last of Us. This could be nothing, as we’ve seen companies do this all the time. It’s also the first wind of The Last of Us film. Sony has a few video game films already in the works with Metal Gear Solid, Uncharted and their successful Resident Evil franchise.

Set in the post-apocalyptic United States, the game tells the story of survivors Joel and Ellie as they work together to survive their westward journey across what remains of the country to find a possible cure for the modern fungal plague that has nearly decimated the entire human race.

A few projects have become money makers (Resident Evil franchise). But a majority of them have been pretty bad. The group of terrible ones include Super Mario Brothers, Double Dragon, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Doom, Hitman, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (major bomb for Disney) and Max Payne. To be fair, we had to endure terrible comic book films over the years too. Titles like Howard The Duck, Steel, Swamp Thing, Elektra Catwoman and others hurt the genre. Perhaps, studios have learned their lessons this time around. Switching gears from beat ’em up titles and focusing on brands with rich stories.
