SHARKNADO 4 is Coming!!

If you appreciate quality art then you will have been watching the third instalment in the epic shark attack saga, Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No! last night. If not then please leave. We don’t want your kind here.

WARNING: big, big spoilers for said third movie follow.

The movie ended on a bit of a surprise twist: the fate of Tara Reid’s character April hung in the balance before the screen cut to black and told the audience that we decide whether #AprilLives or #AprilDies. Neat, huh? Naturally, this clearly suggests that a fourth movie is coming – and it is.

“Now’s your chance to be part of Sharknado history! You decide if April lives or April dies by tweeting your choice now or by going to Sharknado.syfy.com to vote. Her fate will be revealed in Sharknado 4… because we’re not done yet!”

This basically turns Sharknado into even more of a huge TV event than it already is. When was the last time something like this happened? It sharply reminds me of how DC allowed readers to vote for whether the Joker would kill off Jason Todd, but that was a long time ago. This franchise is only successful because it managed to become a social media hit so it makes sense to involve it yet again and draw millions of people into seeing the upcoming fourth movie.

I think these movies are going to keep coming and coming for a long time and constantly find different ways to inject life into it – this is just the first attempt, and it appears to have worked. However, one does wonder how long the brand will be sustainable. The schtick is that these films are fucking awful and they embrace that, but will audiences eventually want to see something more? It’s worked for years with a bunch of different crappy SyFy monster movies but perhaps a day will come when viewers will actually want the channel to churn out something which could be properly identified as good.

If you haven’t seen Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No yet then do give it a watch – it’s more of the same but with lots more fun celebrity cameos. Like this one.
