Before Men In Black and Independence Day, Will Smith became an action star thanks to Michael Bay’s Bad Boys. One of the few awesome Bay films which includes The Rock and the polarizing Pain And Gain. While there was plenty of underlining racist moments in the Bay Boys films, they did prove that black actors can lead a massively successful action franchise within the Hollywood machine. Michael Bay was trying to put together Bad Boys 3 years ago before production on Transformers 2 began, however Will Smith wasn’t interested in coming back at the time. There was chatter that the Miami-set true crime story that inspired Pain And Gain was going to be used for the third installment, making the bodybuilders the villains but Bay turned it into it’s own movie.

Deadline reports that Sony is eager to get another movie into production as they are looking at screenwriter David Guggenheim to pen the script. David is best known for writing Safe House that eventually turned into the Denzel Washington-Ryan Reynolds action thriller hit,  he’s currently writing the sequel Safe House 2, Doug Liman’s (Edge of Tomorrow, Bourne Identity) Narco Sub and Sony’s Uncharted movie. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is back with the expectation they’ll be able to get Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to reprise their roles. Michael Bay isn’t involved currently but that could change, unless he ends up attaching himself to more Transformers films.
