Nick Fury Reveals Scarlet Witch’s Identity

Samuel L. Jackson has confirmed that Elizabeth Olsen will be playing Scarlet Witch in the upcoming Avengers: Age of Ultron. It has been speculated for a while that Olsen was wanted in the role. Now from an interview that the Wall Street Journal did with Jackson we have confirmation.

I know we’re shooting in London, that James Spader is Ultron and going to be the bad guy, and that we added Ms. [Elizabeth] Olsen [who will play the Scarlet Witch], but I don’t know what she’s doing, if she’s on the inside or the outside. I haven’t seen a script. -Samuel L. Jackson

Elizabeth Olsen is the younger sister of pop culture icons Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. She starred in the critically acclaimed Martha Marcy May Marlene. She will also star in the upcoming remake of the Korean cult-classic Oldboy which will come out November 27, and she is also cast in the reboot of Godzilla set to come out in 2014. Her co-star from Godzilla Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Kick-Ass) has been rumored to play Quicksilver, brother of Scarlet Witch.

As stated by Jackson, it is unknown whether the two of them will act as protagonists or as villains in the movie. In the comics they have switched sides often. Their first appearance was in the Brotherhood of Mutants under their father, Magneto, in 1964. By 1965 they both joined the Avengers.

Wanda Maximoff, Scarlet Witch, is a mutant with devastatingly powerful magic. She uses her “hexes” to manipulate probability and things in the world around her. She, at one point with the Avengers, was able to cause Ultron to short circuit and shut down. Though she is very powerful she often is not able to control her own powers resulting in catastrophic consequences (see House of M).
