J.J. Abrams won’t direct STAR WARS EPISODE VII

There have been loads of director rumors circling around the newly announced and forthcoming Star Wars trilogy.  But sadly a good deal of ’em have simply taken themselves out of the running squashing fanboy and fangirl hopes and dreams with a few simple sentences in random interviews.  Well we got another one; it looks like the man behind the Star Trek reboot is out of the running.

Speaking with Empire, here’s what J.J. Abrams had to say on the subject:

I guess the franchises could go up against each other, but I’m not thinking that far ahead! I’m a huge fan of Star Wars, Empire and Jedi, and the idea of the world continuing is exciting and will be amazing. Kathy Kennedy is a friend and there are no smarter producers. It’s in great hands.

He went on to add:

…there were the very early conversations and I quickly said that because of my loyalty to Star Trek, and also just being a fan, I wouldn’t even want to be involved in the next version of those things. I declined any involvement very early on. I’d rather be in the audience not knowing what was coming, rather than being involved in the minutiae of making them.

So be honest who’s a bit happy about this.  Yes the man’s very accomplished and he’s doing some amazing things for that other space bound franchise but call me old fashioned I’d like him to focus on one intergalactic odyssey at a time.  But what you guys think?

Do you believe he made the right decision?  Have you already made the call about who would be the perfect man or woman to helm the next film in this storied franchise?  Or is this attempt to extend the Star Wars saga simply mistake that’s destined to fail under its own weight?  Sound off with your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.
