TEEN TITANS GO! “Double Trouble”/”The Date” Review

In the latest episode of Teen Titans Go!, we had clones and awkward dates to deal with. Did it work?

In the first segment, Double Trouble, through a series of selfish events, Raven (Tara Strong) ends up cloning Cyborg (Khary Payton) and Beast Boy (Greg Cipes). The clones end up causing the other Titans annoyance and inconvenience. In the second segment, The Date, Robin (Scott Menville) wants to ask Starfire (Hynden Walch) out, but Robin’s “rival”, Speedy (also Scott Menville), asks her first, leading Robin to attempt to ruin their date.

The first segment isn’t my favorite. The whole clone plot is played too straight, and many other shows have done it better. You know how the story goes: Cyborg and Beast Boy create clones for selfish reasons, but then the clones turn out to be jerks, and the heroes begin to realize that they made a mistake, yada yada. To be fair, there is a twist at the end, a twist that I actually didn’t see coming. Unfortunately, the twist leads to some gross imagery that I can never unsee.

The second segment is a lot better. Robin continues to be one of the best characters, and I love how Menville voices him. His attempts to ask out Starfire are funny, and the faces he makes when Speedy arrives is ingenious; even Beast Boy comments on the face. Even when Robin kidnaps Speedy, impersonates him, and then attempts to derail the date, you almost can’t help but root for him. Meanwhile, Robin and Speedy having the same voice actor makes some of the jokes more believable. Another point of humor comes from a strange voice in Robin’s head, voiced Ricky Jay, who does a commendable job. The voice steals the show, and makes the ending epic.

One strong point in this show are the Easter eggs and references. In Starfire’s room, we see various plushies based off DC characters, including Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, and even Bane. In another scene, we see a Darkseid doll. Oh, and watch out for the Scooby-Doo homage!

I’m warming up to Teen Titans Go! The first segment didn’t make me laugh too much, but the second was gold. I hope the show continues to improve.
