Supernatural “Survival of the Fittest” Review

The end of the most convoluted season of Supernatural is here.  So did the season finale save Season 7 or doom it to be the worst season of the show?  Read on to find out.

Official description from CW:

SAM AND DEAN STORM SUCROCORP TO TAKE DOWN DICK ROMAN — Dean and Sam prepare for battle with Dick Roman (guest star James Patrick Stuart). Dick’s in the final phase of his plan and the Winchesters must team up with Castiel (guest star Misha Collins), Bobby (guest star Jim Beaver), Meg (guest star Rachel Miner) and Kevin (guest star Osric Chau), the prophet, to stop him. However, Dick is one of the smartest enemies they’ve ever faced so it’s a mind game to see who can keep the upper hand. Robert Singer directed the episode written by Sera Gamble.

From Castiel to Bobby this season was full of changes.  Much like the previous season it was a true mixed bag of both good and bad ideas.  We had the season long threat of the unstoppable monsters, the Leviathans, but the majority of the season was filler.  The main plot was often discarded while Sam and Dean did what the brothers do best, hunt lesser creatures.

To the cast’s credit as mismanaged as the story for this season feels they’ve kept it intriguing and watchable.  Both Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles) Winchester  anchored the show with the very same charisma that they have brought to each and every episode of the series.  But that doesn’t change what happened with the story, and try as they might all of this season’s short comings came to the forefront in the season finale.

Survival of the Fittest” had moments of greatness but it failed to capitalize on them.  We had plot lines brought together to make the overall story make sense and returning characters brought back but for little to no reason.  Sadly all of that was ultimately wasted on a story that had no real legs to begin with.  The cliffhanger gave some promise for next year, offering fans a shake up and perhaps a new lease on life in the show’s eighth season.

To sum up this season started out with some promise but quickly floundered and the season finale perfectly encapsulated that.
