Uncanny Avengers #2 Review

Is the world really ready for the landscape offered in Marvel NOW!?  Should you care?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Marvel:

Marvel Now! continues with Cap’s newest Avengers!

• What are Red Skull’s new powers?

• Havok and Thor vs. Honest John, The Living Propaganda!

• Rogue and Scarlet Witch vs. Red Skull’s S-Men!

• Wolverine and Cap find the truth behind worldwide mutant murder!

If you’ve been looking for a title that deals directly with the aftermath of Avengers vs. X-Men, then this exceptional series is certainly for you.  Uncanny Avengers brings together an outstanding creative team in an effort to address some of the most intriguing and staple themes born from the House of Ideas.

Rick Remender continues to chart the course of this rather mammoth undertaking and you could not have asked for a better writer to act as its captain.  From the inclusion of the Red Skull to the dynamics established in this issue regarding both Rogue and Havoc this author has a clear idea about exactly which notes he’s striving to hit.  Beyond the main bullet points of this little jaunt the dialogue is the key player as each and every character is given the necessary level of intellect and life required to build on an already sturdy foundation.

John Cassaday dazzles with his unique artistic sensibilities.  When any fan cracks this book open chances are the first impression they will have will deal directly with the uncanny attention to detail and the overall level of care given to each and every panel.  The proverbial pencil strokes imbue the tale with thick and slender lines that successfully carry the weight of the script while propelling the narrative quality to new heights.

Uncanny Avengers #2 is an excellent release that flexes its intellectual muscles while embracing some honestly dark themes that have long been the cornerstone of the X-Men side of the Marvel Universe.  Recommended.

Am I the only one bothered by the fact that, contrary to the solicits, Havok and Thor did NOT go against Honest John at all? And that Cap and Wolverine did NOT learn the secret behind worldwide mutant murder?
