Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #19 Review

After last week’s conclusion, Transformers: More Than Meets The Eye #19 offers a satisfying read that answers questions whilst keeping an exciting and engaging story arc going.

The official description from IDW:

BETRAYAL! The Lost Light may be occupied by enemy forces, but that’s the least of RODIMUS’ problems! As he awaits execution, the one-time Matrix holder realizes how little he knows about the people he once called friends. Is there anyone left he can trust? And where does the legendary STAR SABER fit into all this?

This issue answers a lot of questions, which many fans will like. Yet, like most good answers, it keeps you wanting more. That said, it isn’t entirely original. The whole concept of a good-guy gone bad, or deluded through false ideals, is no small trope in itself. Whilst it’s not entirely original or unique, a Transformers spin on the old plot-line is always interesting enough in it’s own right. Plus, utilizing a small cast, such as More Than Meets The Eye, really helps push this angle.

The writing really starts to show it’s head here. With most of the cast in a prison cell, the dialogue really needs to shine. Thankfully, James Roberts once again demonstrates an understanding for the characters. There is a strong sense of tension in the writing that suits this issue well.. surprisingly well at times. That said, it’s not without the odd bit of violence/action but, hey, it’s Transformers.. a fight or two is always expected. That being said, this issue does focus a lot on the back-story, lore and mythos of Transformers, which could confuse newer readers.

Visually, More Than Meets The Eye #19 also holds it’s own weight. Given the personal focus on key characters here, it helps that Alex Milne’s pencils focus on character detail and definition. The large panels give way where they need to and, for the most part, it’s a very clear read. It also goes well with Josh Burcham’s colors, offering various colors and contrasts that help define the various areas of this issue.

All in all, I’m very impressed with More Than Meets The Eye #19. It demonstrates a mature understanding of the characters and, although it isn’t an overly action-filled issue, the future issues and story as a whole will be all the more better for it.
