The Spider #3 Review

The terror of Anput continues, but is this latest issue of The Spider a worthwhile purchase?  Read on.

The official description from Dynamite:

Lines have been drawn and sides have been chosen, and now the battle begins in earnest. As Anput continues her assault against New York, turning innocent citizens into zombies, the Spider desperately searches for the means to stop her. The truth, however, may lead to the Spider’s own past. The stakes will rise beyond belief as the 21st century rebirth of the Spider deals out mayhem and destruction of the most pulptastic kind.

The Spider #3, finds our hero a bit lost as he tries to figure out what to do next.  But can he get a plan together before Anput destroys New York?  I honestly don’t know because this wasn’t the conclusion of the arc, it was merely the third act.

In what can readily be described as a mixed bag, the script by series writer David Liss has both good and bad moments.  The design of the comic needed a stronger foundation to justify the conclusions and interactions therein, rather than a series of conversations that come off as a bit robotic and unfeeling.  Overall the narrative is a solid enough engine but it’s the parts inside that ultimately let the issue down.

From start to finish the art by Colton Worley is the star of this issue.  Think lines allow a detailed and near-photo realistic world that successfully informs the narrative while elevating this issue to new heights.  I’m not going to champion it as the reason to purchase this release, but it is a very solid argument to give this issue a look.

The Spider #3 is a decent enough comic book with some story issues that hopefully will work themselves out over time.  Despite any potential drawbacks I still found myself enjoying the read, for that reason alone this issue squeaks by with a recommendation.
