Supreme #65 Review

Is this trip back to the 90’s worth a pick up?  Read on.

The official description from Image:

“A GOD GONE MADE”

The original Supreme returns – and he’s pissed! The Ivory Icon is out for revenge and his old ally SuperPatriot is caught in the crossfire.

The weight of the world has fallen onto Suprema, as the Jerk Supreme causes some damage.  The rest of the Supremes’ have lost their powers just as the villains plot and the government tries to seize some sort of control in this crazy situation.  The story has some destruction, some mayhem, a high causality count and an old friend beaten to near death as this issue ramps itself up to a couple of forthcoming confrontations.

Erik Larsen delivers a script that reads and feels like something from the 90s.  Now, I know that might sound like a negative connotation but it isn’t.  The dialog falls into some of the pitfalls of old school comics but overall the narrative shakes off these minor moments and flows well enough to keep the issue engaging.  The simple complexities offered here will no doubt keep your attention until you reach the final page, if you can ignore the rockier parts of the narrative.

The art in this issue is fine, as Erik Larsen and Cory Hamscher share duties and attempt to deliver a solid stylized world.  The results work but they won’t be for everyone.  In my opinion Erik Larsen is a talented  and capable artist but he has never been a favorite of mine.  However, his overall style and unique character designs serve this script well enough to make the panels work.

Let’s be honest, the prospect of an angry vengeful Supreme locked away then released is already enough to warrant a read.  If you can ignore any possible script missteps and find some enjoyment from the art contained here, this issue is certainly for you.  Recommended.
