Star Wars #6 Review

The latest issue of the series seeks to further explore the original trilogy, but is the story being offered really worth delving into?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

When he and Chewbacca are cornered by Imperials, Han Solo resorts to an improvised plan—with the most dangerous results imaginable! Meanwhile, half a galaxy away, Princess Leia and Wedge Antilles prepare for certain death, unaware that Luke Skywalker has an improvisation of his own. And Darth Vader is watching…

The Star Wars universe has been an ongoing narrative for more than thirty years and many creative teams have graced fandom with their presence.  But I have to say that after six issues I find myself to be thoroughly excited about the work being done here by this creative duo.

Brian Wood pens the script and the accomplished author knows exactly what kind of odyssey he wants to tell.  He wastes absolutely no time continuing the precarious situations that are currently plaguing the primary cast of characters.  Whether it’s a smuggler attempting to escape Coruscant or an injured pilot in a damaged fighter this author knows exactly when to hit those all important emotional ques in order to make you feel for their bleak but nonetheless engaging situations.  Near the end there were a few stumbles as the cliffhanger attempted to reach everyone with abrupt quick cuts but more often than not the work on display was more than good enough to hold my attention.

The art by Carlos D’Anda is not going to appeal to everyone but it certainly passes my inspection.  Each line and every curve offers a kinetic but outlandish rendition that both pays homage to the movies while yielding illustrations that are very much their own interpretation of the source material.  To be frank I did find some of the panels, and the execution therein, to be a tad bit rushed but trust me these instances do little to sully an otherwise glowing display of skill.

Star Wars #6 does more than enough to handily earn a spot on any fans coveted pull-list.  Recommended.

Agreed: quick cuts bad. I am enjoying the series, but did not like those last few panels. Why not just make the arc one issue longer? And can someone explain how exactly Luke’s contraption of fuel cells and a proton torpedo caused such a giant explosion, when any time a TIE shoots down an X-Wing, it blows up the same fuel cells and proton torpedoes?
