Star Wars #1 Review

Is this latest extension of the Star Wars franchise really worth your money and time? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

This is Star Wars as you remember it… and as you have never seen it before! We’re taking you back to those heady, adventure-filled days following the destruction of the Death Star—when the Empire ruled, the Rebels were on the run, and the galaxy was a dangerous place where anything might happen!

Whether you’re a devoted follower or just someone who happens to enjoy the movies, this comic book is chock-full of stuff for everyone.  The creative team behind it wisely chose to use the original trilogy and the near immediate aftermath following the destruction of the first Death Star to tell their new tale. What we have here is a nicely structured beginning to what seems to be a very engaging arc that’s full of familiar characters.

The script by Brian Wood doesn’t just focus in on the innately interesting situation our heroes find themselves in, it also explores the political as well as economical perspectives attached to this era.  But beneath it all is a solid foundation that’s slowly but surely pushing a secret mission to the forefront.  The dialogue is spot on as each proverbial player from the films sounds exactly as they should, and save for a few moments that suffer from unnecessary narration this is an exceptionally solid affair.

Carlos D’Anda absolutely delivers on the art is almost every possible area.  He depicts classic locations and fresh renditions of these storied characters with relative ease while charging forward with the visual aspects of the saga.  There were moments where details felt a bit off and facial features between characters lost their passing resemblance to their movie counterparts, but thankfully these instances were few and far between.

Star Wars #1 is a very entertaining release that uses all of the toys in its arsenal as it tries to deliver something that fans will easily enjoy.  It does stumble a bit but for the most part this package easily earns a recommendation.
