Son of Merlin #2 Review

Can Simon quickly learn the magic necessary to escape the clutches of Morgana and the Black Knights?  Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

THE BATTLE BEGINS ANEW

Morgana and her Black Knights will stop at nothing to thwart Merlin and obtain the Stone of Giramphiel. With Merlin out of the picture, the only person who can stop Morgana is a young MIT professor – Simon Ambrose. But Simon is a scientist and a man of reason. Will Simon accept his magical heritage? Or will his rigid understanding of the universe get in his way?

Right off the bat action is literally in our face, as the opening scenes are peppered with magic, bullets and a car chase that eventually cuts to a montage featuring our hero while he learns and comes to grip with his genealogy.  Daddy Merlin was loaded kids, MTV Cribz loaded.

I personally love fantasy stories, especially when they take a normal person and give them powers overnight it usually leads to some very awesome reactions.  I mean if I had a nickel for every time I wished that this would happen to me, I’d be in a Merlin mansion myself.  Robert Napton delivers a brilliant tale, tying in Simon’s attraction to energy with his enchanted lineage. The author allows us to watch as the protagonist chooses to accept his destiny with the help of the lovely Gwen. It’s a classic tale of an underdog facing the giant retold in modern times.

The artwork done by Zid is breathtaking and fits perfectly for this genre . His work from wounds to the female anatomy is expertly detailed.  During the scenes with magic, the images he generated featuring the radiated power simply highlight a more consistent and even sharper style.

Son of Merlin #2 is nothing short of a page turner, and I wish this arc would last longer than five issues as I see the potential for so many more adventures here. Here’s to hoping this duo continues to collaborate on maybe yet another series.  Recommended.
