Wonder Woman #29 Review

After all this can this arc deliver something in its eleventh hour that’s going to be remembered? Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

If the helmet fits…then it’s time to play God!

Wonder Woman 29_Preview Page 1There’s so much spiraling that it’s a bit hard to watch all these dominoes fall. But as this creative team’s three year arc nears its end and the first causalities arrive there’s an unmistakable spark of hope as an army stands united. Olympus, after the events in last month’s outing, lays in ruins as the First Born seems to be on the verge of his ultimate victory. Fans should prepare because everyone is fair game as this course towards a confrontation edges further toward completion.

Brian Azzarello pens the “King of Ashes” as Wonder Woman and her allies come face to face with some disturbing events. There’s a lot going on, as a nuanced but fast moving piece pushes everything forward in a way that may end this odyssey but leaves an unmistakable feeling of foundation. From Heaven to Earth the text knows exactly what dialogue to deliver as it emboldens our primary to take up a mantle she may not have wanted but she’s readily prepared for. The whole thing is remarkable, as this literary master proves the point of this reboot by giving a new generation a heroine that’s worth rooting for.

Beyond the works of the author is the amazing illustrations done by Cliff Chiang. This talent knows exactly how to attack these players in his own unique fashion while carrying a minimalist distinction. There’s a lot of room for additional lines that could clutter the panels but the artist knows how to limit himself while leaving us with an expansive final page that will generate excitement. Add in the out of the world colors done by Matthew Wilson and you have a vibrant and worthwhile package that could carry the narrative without text.

Wonder Woman #29 is a fine feature that exudes accomplishment and we still have quite a few issues left until this saga comes to a close. Highly recommended.
