Wonder Woman #28 Review

After two and a half years is there enough left to hold your attention? Read on to find out.

The official description from DC:

The last time the First Born came for Olympus, it took the death of the God of War to stop him. And if Wonder Woman is now the God of War…and if the First Born is more determined than ever to claim his birthright…then things are about to get VERY violent indeed!

Wonder Woman 28_Varant CoverThe time has come for the prophecy, that was set in motion with the inaugural issue of this volume, to fall into place. Sacrifices will be made, as the stage is set for all out war! But we have to focus on the now, where the creative team has given us a distraction while fire festers in the background.

Brian Azzarello nails it once again, by providing just enough context to not only address our heroine but sufficiently build up the constant threat that should be on her mind. I’ll admit that it has become rather annoying that we see Diana in a less proactive role but it is heartwarming to recognize that one of her core mechanics is still at play. While her drama continues the scribe treats us to a god to god battle that may just start the ultimate heavenly war. Rest assured, like almost every other release in this franchise, it’s engages as it builds to a cliffhanger.

The art is striking as Cliff Chiang shows his mastery over the property. The way he lavishly details the world and sets the mood while employing a minimalist touch has gone a long way in selling this current interpretation.  There’s a particular panel early on that caught my eye, as the talent displayed how far his ability to capture proper facial expressions has grown during his run. Add in the colors by Matthew Wilson and we’re sure to have plenty of happy fans that are clamoring for more.

Wonder Woman #28 suffers a bit from plot elements that feel redundant, but the lasso of truth compels me to admit that it entertained. Recommended.
