Tomb Raider #8 Review

Does the latest arc stay on target or veer off course? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Chernobyl beckons Lara and her friends as they attempt to uncover the truth . . . a truth that could cost them their very lives. As frightening details come to light, they must fight to survive as they’re stalked by a killer!

Tomb Raider 8_Preview CoverThe truth is fans are stuck in a narrative holding pattern until Rise of the Tomb Raider arrives on their respective consoles, but the fine folks behind this comic are intent in making the time between gaming sequels count. And that honestly makes this book special, as it carries the weight of an established narrative while maintaining just enough forward momentum to not feel like a nearly endless purgatory.

Gail Simone and Rhianna Pratchett work together to bring this romp to life. By giving their audience a unique environment and a young heroine with a hefty weight of guilt on her shoulders, the final product ebbs and flows with clear conviction. It’s a defining feature of our young Miss Lara Croft, as the lady with all the right tools is forced once again to use them. What’s clear at this point is that our adventurer holds a lot of love for the people that have touched her life, especially as she endeavors to do right even when they’re gone.

The written word does exactly what it needs to do, as the illustrations by Derlis Santacruz completes the package. Every bit of the environement and character therein gets just enough detail in order to sell the resonance of this alienated environment. With growing mysteries at play, a quality barrage of pencil strokes becomes a necessary comfort. And any imperfections are quickly covered up by the dynamite colors delivered by Michael Atiyeh.

Tomb Raider #8 is another strong outing that maintains the level of quality it needs to while inching just slightly forward. For dedicated fans looking for a way to keep their video game fire burning, this is absolutely a worthwhile way to spend $3.50 a month. As this handily comes recommended.
