T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #6 Review

Our heroes are off to rescue a kidnapped comrade, but should you care if they get him back? Read on to find out.

The official description from IDW:

A now-powerless Dynamo is at the mercy of the mysterious Dr. Sparta somewhere in South America. When NoMan, Lug, and Weed set out to rescue him, they find themselves caught in a brutal civil war, but just which side is Dr. Sparta on? Also, Kat Kane discovers the true nature of the Judgment Towers, will her sanity be the price of knowledge?

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents 6_Preview Page 1I am simply loving this comic series so far. I’ll confess that my knowledge of the property prior to this volume was minimal at best but it didn’t take much to get me enamored with this international force of super individuals. To the creative team’s credit they do a wonderful job playing with some very corny toys without, even for a moment, coming off as overly hammy or unnecessarily forceful with their concepts. They even manage to hit home with some worthwhile social commentary!

Phil Hester, I thought some of your best work came from your time with The Darkness, clearly I was mistaken. With this outing the scribe cements himself as someone to be reckoned with, as he easily crafts a believable follow through to the zany antics found in #5. And when we finally see who’s behind all this dinobot madness (sincerely sorry Transformer fans, couldn’t help myself) it makes perfect sense. It sounds stupid when you say it aloud but it more than works within the framework, but feel free to make fun of said revelation.

The art by Roger Robinson smartly crafts a soft atmosphere with just enough edgy lines to modernize this tale. He has a knack for bringing to life a cast of oddly compelling creatures while maintaining the bedrock mechanics that have made this new volume successful. Add in the colors by Rom Fajardo and there’s no doubt that we’re all in for a visual treat.

T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents #6 is an entertaining comic that may not be for everyone but it merits a look. Recommended.
