STAR WARS: DARTH MAUL—SON OF DATHOMIR #1 Review

With the license set to expire and return to Disney, is this a corner of the franchise that really needs to be explored? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

Getting cut in half by Obi-Wan Kenobi and being rejected by his former Sith master Darth Sidious isn’t going to defeat Darth Maul. In fact, it only makes him mad enough to take on the galaxy—with an army of Mandalorians!

A part of The Clone Wars season 6 you never saw!

Star Wars—Darth Maul-Son of Dathomir 1_Preview PageI posed a simple question at the top of this review, and let me start off by answering it: yes it is. The Force is no doubt strong with this release, as a powerful warrior and some familiar enemies make their presence known to a couple dark lords of the Sith. The creative team has crafted something compelling and I honestly can’t wait to see how it unfolds.

Ever since I saw Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace, I’ve been captivated by this originally short lived apprentice. And as I close this comic book I realize that the opening script Jeremy Barlow reminds me, more and more, why fans appreciated Darth Maul. He was a sorely underused antagonist that got replaced by Count Dooku. There’s a lot of elements that go into this narrative but the author keeps a firm footing with consistent dialogue and a seamless transition for a fondly remembered franchise character.

The illustrations handed in by Juan Frigeri are competent enough to embody the television series that this title seeks to extend. It’s through that established lore that an innate visual language is formed, with just enough detail to deliver quite a few iconic panels. Fans are sure to be pleased by the display but there were a few moments where the reactions looked a bit underdeveloped, even so the colors by Mauro Vargas makes up for any hiccups along the way.

Star Wars: Darth Maul—Son of Dathomir #1 is a solid start to what should be a rousing mini-series. So grab a seat, find some light and enjoy this recommended release.
