The Star Wars #6 Review

Is there enough to love in this adaption to really garner attention or praise? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

A dogfight with Imperial fighter craft, a dangerous detour through an asteroid field, and a forced evacuation in life-pods land Luke Skywalker and company on Yavin—the planet of the Wookiees!

But Princess Leia gets separated from the group, and when slavers capture her, Annikin Starkiller goes all Jedi on them!

The Star Wars 6_Preview Page 1It’s a sad thing to pick up these comics and know that time for this specific iteration of the storied franchise grows short. But thankfully as this volume winds down, I get to report that as of the sixth issue it’s still more than worthwhile . And thanks to the efforts of the creative team I can easily see the legacy of this lasting beyond it’s meager eight issue run.

J. W. Rinzler pens the script and I can’t speak to how well he adapts the original screenplay by George Lucas, but I can say this is one literary scribe that takes the elements we know and finds a way to reincorporate them. That right there is the magic of the outing as General Luke Skywalker and his apprentice Annikin Starkiller work with their ragtag team against the might of the Empire. It’s key elements in different locations, and the only shortcoming is that some of the dialogue feels forced.

The art done by Mike Mayhew is the star of this entry, as the illustrator offers up a photo-realism that few can muster. He creates a cinematic extension for something that by all rights should not event exist, while yielding alterations that are strangely inviting. The colors done by Rain Beredo round off the package as this visual component compels from start to finish. All things added together this is the reason to purchase this comic with or without the text.

The Star Wars #6 is something that doesn’t need to be, but I’m glad it’s at my local shop. So come with this creative team to a galaxy that’s familiar but full of revitalized wonderment. Recommended.
