Morning Glories 42_Preview PageWhat always strikes me about this particular franchise is how effortlessly its creative team maneuvers their growing mystery without cheapening the players involved. There are quite a few perilous situations that could easily muddle their narrative, but somehow they manage to avoid them within the fractured halls of the Morning Glories Academy. It’s that truth where the reason behind this journey rests and separates itself from the other titles bombarding comic shops.

Nick Spencer pens the script and if there was one central theme following #41‘s shocking cliffhanger, it’s choice. Right now the tortured and tormented have the chance to step up their role in this game. And the author makes use of that fact by giving us a logical sequence of events that seem to pull, just enough, of our cast into the thick of it while Casey Blevins gets the spotlight. It’s a body of text that oozes with personality, which served the growing conundrum of this institution while paving the way for familiar but matured paths. In other words: this is knowledgeable work made for the ardent fanboys and fangirls that have supported it.

If I really wanted to spend the whole day gushing over the written word I could but I’d miss the opportunity to chat about the stellar works of Joe Eisma. Once again the illustrator uses simplicity to his advantage, as each character breathes with a spark of life that carried a kinetic energy. There were panels early on that seemed a bit wobbly in their final pencil strokes but the ultimate quality of the product speaks for itself. Especially when the colors by Paul Little get added to the potent visual mix.

Morning Glories #42 is superb and engrossing. Month in and month out I honestly can’t wait to read the next step in this creative team’s literary journey, and this outing is no different. Highly recommended
