Miss Fury #9 Review

Is this a franchise that really needs to continue? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

PHILADELPHIA 1 of 2. With Miss Fury now working undercover as The Pharaoh of Time’s chief assassin, she is sent to a Philadelphia shipyard to murder a nuclear physicist who could become a time travel threat. But that physicist is working on The Philadelphia Experiment! In the battle that follows, Miss Fury and the crew of the USS Eldridge find themselves thrown through time… into a naval battle unlike any seen before. Can Miss Fury save the scientific mind that could finally end the time war?

Miss Fury 9_Variant CoverAfter all that’s befallen our protagonist in just nine issues I can gleefully say I can’t wait to see where this creative team takes this title next. We have a character with true inner turmoil and the talents behind this tale of time-traveling madness have kept things lively thus far.

Rob Williams gave Miss Fury a striking moral conundrum, and she reacted, in a way that might have doomed her own soul in the process. Now we’re seeing if the woman beneath the mask, Marla Drake, can become more than what she currently believes herself to be. That’s what really works this outing, as the author successfully takes this vigilante on a personal road with loss, choice and perhaps eventual redemption. Beyond that we get the trademark wit of our primary player to keep these narrative cogs moving rather briskly.

The visual component for this franchise has always been one of its stronger points. And the latest work done by Jack Herbert continues that burgeoning legacy, by giving eager followers a barrage of detail and personality. Minus a few instances where some panels seemed a wee bit off, the bulk of the package carries the weight of the text nicely. Combined with the stellar colors done by Ivan Nunes and we have something that’s really special within the confines of this comic book.

Miss Fury #9 is an endlessly engaging adventure that may suffer from the occasional illustrative hiccup, but it still easily earns a recommendation from me.
