Lola XOXO #4 Review

At this point is this really a comic book that needs to be on your pull-list? Read on to find out.

The official description from Aspen:

The Wasteland Trading Company arrives in the town on Sinmora, where they find their fair share of alcohol and debauchery to satisfy their thirst for action. However, as is often the case in the Wasteland, they bite off more than they can chew, as they learn of a place that no merchant has yet to return from alive, a mysterious site that piques Lola’s curiosity—even if the risk of exploration could mean her life!

Lola XOXO 4_Variant CoverRight off the bat what grabs my attention is how effortlessly this property changes whatever mood I’m in. It doesn’t matter what mindset I begin with it only takes a few pages for its narrative progression to draw me in. And yes this outing proves yet again that this title is still that good.

Siya Oum pens the script and the talent has done something special with Lola and her world. From the first issue on we’ve been learning about it with her, and because of that each twist and turn carries substance as our protagonist reacts with us. Through that interaction a unique bond is formed while the author builds to yet another cliffhanger that further redefines the boundaries of the book. I did find some of the dialogue to be a bit awkward, nonetheless this future wasteland chronicle has considerable legs that are worth taking note of.

The illustrations are, in my opinion, the number one draw for this piece of fiction. Siya Oum continues to lavish her creator-owned series with beautiful panels. Each pencil stroke feels essential even as the backgrounds take on a minimal amount of detail. The focus is on the characters and to be honest I wouldn’t have it any other way as every page feels well used and never wasted or underdeveloped.

Lola XOXO #4 continues what has been an experience, it’s not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but I have to admit that I’ve enjoyed every single second of it. Recommended.
