Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure #6 Review

Is there enough going on to keep fans for another round? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dynamite:

THIS IS IT! The moment you have been waiting for since landing in the Big City with Magna Spadarossa: the appearance of RED SONJA! Monsters, villains, and bloodshed fill this issue as The Steampunk She-Devil fights her way through the beast laden lands of Monstocity to unravel the true mystery of this saga: what are these beast men, what is their connection to the multitude of identical assassins, and where do they all come from?

Legenderry-A Steampunk Adventure 6_Variant CoverThis epic re-imagining featuring several different iconic franchises has entered its penultimate outing. The odyssey took a somewhat expected turn last month, but that narrative path ultimately set the ground work for the most entertaining jaunt in this property’s short history. To sum up: the creative team rocks it from beginning to end, as a certain heroine takes center stage.

What struck me the most was how Bill Willingham effortlessly took on the mantle of Red Sonja, by perfectly illustrating the familiar quirks of the character. But he didn’t stop there. The author went further by not simply abandoning her identity crisis, as the entire body of text took a slow and steady flow in Magna Spadarossa‘s transition to She-Devil. Add in some smart dialogue and a welcome introduction for Zorro and this turned out to be a worthwhile piece of fiction.

Sergio Fernandez Davila handled the pictures and might I say the talent did a marvelous job. Each panel is given just enough room to breath as pencil strokes build up a landscape that more than fits the larger than life players that happen to inhabit it. Add in the colors by Wes Hartman and I’m left with few complaints, except for a handful of minor moments where less vibrancy might have yielded a bit more stability for the finished product.

Legenderry: A Steampunk Adventure #6 is an easy one to grade because the creative team offered quality in a sea of conceptual possibility. This penultimate issue succeeds as it certainly comes recommended.
