Invincible Universe #12 Review

Is this the last issue of Invincible Universe? Read on to find out.

The official description from Image:

King Lizard’s plan has been unleashed and split the Guardians in two! When the smoke clears, will anyone be left to save the day?

InvincibleUniverse12-pg1This issue marks the end of the series (at least for the foreseeable future) as between developments in the main Invincible series and artist Todd Nauck’s departure to draw the new Nightcrawler series Image have decided to end the series. This is slightly sad as though the series has never reached the same level as the main Invincible series the concept along with the adventures have been very interesting and exciting and it will be sorely missed.

Phil Hester opens the issue in a very dramatic fashion having King Lizard pit Guardian against Guadian. He also gives a lot of suspense throughout with the peril situation near the end adding a lot of intensity to this final issue. Hester last script wasn’t without fault as the overall sequence involving the Guardians of the Globe and King Lizard ended extremely briefly. He did however luckily turn this disappointing turn of events into a gripping final leg for this issue and the series as a whole, having the Guardians of the Globe and Invincible work together like they never have before.

It’s been a real joy to see Todd Nauck‘s art over the course of this series and he’s certainly left some of his best work for last. The fun and charming look of Nauck has really fit along with the benchmark that Ryan Ottley and Cory Walker have set on the main series over the years. Much like Ottley and Walker he can also give intensity with there being some brutal action. He also adds a lot of tone and realism to the issue through the dramatic facial expressions and the fabulous layouts with it adding a lot of energy to the story. Combine this with the fantastic colours of Gabe Eltaeb and you have extremely fun art.

Invincible Universe comes to an end but this entertaining companion to the main Invincible series ends on a high, also leaving the series/story open for a potential follow-on. Highly recommended.

Ah crap, I was not aware that the comic was ending, although I’m not surprised as the sales are pretty terrible.
