All good things must come to an end.

Invincible110-pg2Invincible is easily one of the best independent superhero series’ ever made and in recent issues it’s had some interesting development all of which seem to be leading up to something big. In this issue in particular we get some extremely shocking and dramatic developments all of which leave this fanboy with plenty to comment on.

Robert Kirkman does a good job of showing the interaction between Mark and Eve upon his return after being gone for six months. The deep and intense exchange of words was very gripping and having followed these characters since the beginning I kind of feel attached to their development. This however is all that’s good about this issue as following this deep sequence Kirkman moves on to show the Viltrumite known as Anissa make advances on Mark in what can only be referred to as a smutty sequence. Now I understand that the Viltumites are trying to repopulate creating half-breads but do we really need to see stuff like this and especially following a relatively touching sequence.

Ryan Ottley‘s art is easily the best that have ever featured in any Invincible related comic and over the years his art has personified the look of the Invincible Universe. In this issue Ottley continues to show his unique flair for the dynamic, giving a exciting and fun look throughout the issue. He also manages to give a lot of depth as with the interaction between Mark and Eve looking very intense. On top of this Ottley also handles the Mark/Anissa encounter in a very tactful way taking a bit of sting out of the inappropriate development.

Invincible continues to amaze as though this issue sees some questionable storytelling it also has a very deep and dramatic development that will have long term fans hanging off every word. Recommended.

I also didn’t enjoy what happened in this issue, but it all fits in with the story, and is actually something I had wondered about when the Viltrumites first got the order to repopulate their species. While I didn’t think it was going to be an issue for the men, I had wondered how the women might feel about it.

Like it or not, the sequence that happens in this comic fits with the story and doesn’t seem like it was shoehorned in for controversy. Along with that, it almost did have to be shown as it was, since now there is no question as to what happened, why it happened and how the involved parties feel about it. Given that, I wouldn’t have knocked the issue any ‘points’ for this sequence.

Yeah but they used to go all this is family friendly by showing other stuff during similar sequences, and following the touching encounter it seemed to be a bit of wrong timing. Still I see you point I just feel that it could have been handled with a bit more tact, as though some series need this sort of thing I feel that Invincible doesn’t need it that much (or at least in the way shown). Though these are only my opinions the whole series as a whole and going forwards is great. Hard to find another series that has taken 110 issue to leave me with this sort of affect.
