Veil #5 Review

Will this mini-series find a return to form for this conclusion? Read on to find out.

The official description from Dark Horse:

The mysterious young woman named Veil fights to escape the powerful men controlling her. There’s only one person she can trust, but he’s about to learn that love, whether it’s twisted or pure, always demands a sacrifice.

Veil #5 previewThe penultimate issue of Veil gave us some strange, and sudden developments, with the end result being rather underwhelming. It’s this that left me sceptical about this issue, as though the series as a whole has amazed me, the previous issue definitely didn’t. Luckily however it finds form in this concluding issue, with the events throughout being thoroughly gripping.

Greg Rucka has for the better part of this series delivered something truly captivating, with the mysterious elements, and dark tones being balanced perfectly. He has however left the best for last, with the thrilling final developments, and exciting action being utterly gripping. What especially captivated me was the connection between Veil and Dante, as though Cormac is in control of Veil, Dante still believes in her. Despite this the issue still moves rather quickly, with some aspects ending before they’ve begun.

Toni Fejzula‘s art has been the standout feature of this series, with the artists taking Rucka’s enthralling script and making it visually stunning. Having a very enticing layout, his art glides swiftly from panel to panel, with the scenery and character positioning helping to set atmosphere. He also manages to deliver some awe inspiring moments, with the darker edge remaining the standout feature. His soft, punchy colours also continue to captivate, with the block shading also adding texture and tone.

Veil may have had it’s flaws as of late, but the five part mini-series has proven to be an all round success, with this issue bringing events to a thrilling conclusion. Between character development and stunning visuals this proves a must have for fans of Rucka’s work, making the less than stellar issues worth it. Highly recommended.
